Etsy photo size: listing and thumbnail sizes that work
The listing photo size Etsy recommends, the 635 px minimum for the first photo, file types, and how to frame a thumbnail that survives every crop.

Etsy is flexible about photos, which is why sellers keep asking the same question: what size should they be? Here is what Etsy itself says, and a simple way to frame the first photo so it looks right everywhere it appears.
The numbers
| What | Etsy's guidance |
|---|---|
| Recommended size | At least 2000 px wide and 2000 px high |
| First photo, minimum | At least 635 x 635 px; smaller first photos can show up lower in search |
| Files | JPG, PNG or GIF; Etsy staff have suggested keeping files under 1 MB so they upload quickly |
| Resolution | 72 PPI is fine; for screens the pixel size is what counts |
| Photos per listing | Up to 20 |
From Etsy's Help Center (image requirements and best practices, and the Search Visibility page) and an Etsy staff announcement in the Etsy Community. Etsy updates these pages, so check them before a big photo shoot.
Why the thumbnail gets cut off
Etsy shows your first photo in more than one shape. Shop Home, for example, shows listing images as squares, and other places crop them differently. Etsy's advice is a first photo that is landscape or square, shot with room around the product, and a look at the thumbnail adjustment tool when you create or edit the listing.
- Shoot wider than you think, with the product in the middle.
- Keep the product inside the central square of the frame, with space on every side.
- Export at 4:3 landscape or square, with at least 2000 px on the short side.
- After uploading, open the thumbnail adjustment and check the crop.
Which photos to add
- First: the whole finished product, sharp and well lit. A single photo, not a collage.
- Then the product in use or in a setting, a close-up of the material or a detail, its size next to something familiar, the back or the inside, and the packaging.
- Keep the light and background consistent across the set, so the listing looks like one shoot.
STAR Seller Studio makes the Etsy version for you. Its AI Autopilot cuts the product out on your phone, picks studio backdrops that suit it and exports an Etsy picture at 2700 x 2025 px (4:3) with the product centred, plus square and Amazon versions from the same photo. It also writes the title, description and tags on your phone, from the facts you enter.

Questions
What is the best size for Etsy listing photos?
At least 2000 px on both sides. A 4:3 photo of 2700 x 2025 px or a square of 2000 x 2000 px both work well.
What size is the Etsy thumbnail?
There is no single fixed size: Etsy crops your first photo to fit different places, including a square on Shop Home. Make the first photo at least 635 px on each side (2000 px is better) and keep the product centred.
Why do my Etsy photos look blurry?
Usually the file is small, or it was cropped hard from a small original. Upload 2000 px or more on each side and shoot in good light, so the phone does not smooth away detail.
Can I try STAR Seller Studio for free?
Yes. Your first product photo is free in the app, and every plan starts with a 7-day free trial. Cancel before it ends and you pay nothing.
