How to make a 3D photo effect (parallax) on your phone

What a 3D photo effect is, which photos work best, and how to turn a still photo into a short parallax video on your phone.

Updated 2026-10-22

A 3D photo effect, sometimes called a parallax or 2.5D effect, makes a still photo look like a short film: the camera seems to move, the foreground slides past the background and the scene gets depth. It works on almost any photo, and it no longer needs a desktop editor.

How it works

The effect needs a depth map: a guess, for every pixel, of how far it is from the camera. Phones can now estimate depth from a single ordinary photo with a small on-device model. With depth known, the photo is split into layers that move at different speeds as a virtual camera moves, and the gaps that open behind the subject are filled in.

Photos that work best

Step by step on the phone

  1. Open the photo and let the app read the depth (a second or two on a recent phone).
  2. Pick a camera move: a slow push is the safest, orbit and vertigo are the most dramatic.
  3. Add one extra: a new sky, arrows that make water or clouds flow, snow or fireflies between the layers, or a title that sits behind the subject.
  4. Keep it short: 5 to 8 seconds loops well on Reels and TikTok.
  5. Export in 9:16 for stories and reels, 4:5 for the feed.

STAR AI Photo & Video Maker does the reading for you. Its AI Director looks at the depth, the sky, the water, the subject and the light, and proposes complete edits (a camera move, a look, a sky, moving water, a title) with a short note on why each one fits. You apply one with a tap and fine-tune it. The 3D effects run on the phone; only the optional AI Studio tools send a photo, and the app asks first.

Questions

Do I need a phone with a depth camera or LiDAR?

No. The depth is estimated from the ordinary photo, so older photos and screenshots work too.

Why do edges sometimes smear?

When the camera moves, areas hidden behind the subject become visible and must be filled in. Smaller moves and a clear subject keep this invisible.

Can I try it for free?

Yes. Your first photo is free to edit, and every plan starts with a 7-day free trial.
